William McDonough joins CarbonCure Advisory Board

William McDonough, one of the world’s most influential leaders on the sustainable design of buildings, products and materials, announced today that he has joined CarbonCure’s advisory board. In his role, Mr. McDonough will help influence the firm’s strategic direction as it refines its technology to be of maximum benefit to the concrete industry and the environment.

“I’m honored and excited to work closely with such an influential and accomplished innovator in green building design and materials,” said Robert Niven, CEO of CarbonCure Technologies. “CarbonCure’s reuse of carbon dioxide to improve the performance of concrete is a natural fit with Bill’s vision for a ‘more good, not just less bad, world.’”

In the built environment, Mr. McDonough’s prolific career as a pioneer and innovator began with building Ireland’s first solar house (1976) and designing the first “green office” in New York for the Environmental Defense Fund (1985). His architectural portfolio includes many of the recognized flagships of the sustainable design, including the Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies at Oberlin College, the Ford River Rouge Complex, Nike’s European Headquarters and, most recently, NASA’s Sustainability Base.

At the same time, through MBDC, the groundbreaking chemistry firm he co-founded with Dr. Braungart, William McDonough has helped leading companies profitably implement the Cradle to Cradle® framework for continuous improvement in their products. At the invitation of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, he co-founded the non-profit Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute in 2009 to create a global standard for the development of safe and healthy products based on the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Program developed by MBDC and gifted to the Institute.  Through McDonough Innovation, Mr. McDonough has continued to expand his positive impact by helping a range of organizations embed principled innovation and continuous improvement into strategic planning, product development, and corporate culture.

“CarbonCure exemplifies the leading edge of a movement to develop immediately scalable industrial uses for carbon dioxide that produce value-added healthy building materials,” said Mr. McDonough. “I’m very excited to help this solution realize its global potential.”
