William McDonough Keynotes Sustainable Brands: A Bold New Vision for the Collection, Processing, Circularity and Productivity of Plastic Waste

William McDonough took the stage at Sustainable Brands ‘19 Detroit yesterday to share a Cradle to Cradle Design™-inspired solution to the global plastics crisis. The presentation, titled A Bold New Vision for the Collection, Processing, Circularity and Productivity of Plastic Waste, was McDonough’s return to the conference after keynoting in 2017.

Fortune magazine recently named McDonough number 24 on their annual list of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders, in part for his efforts to redesign plastics. McDonough works with some of the world’s largest brands to help them rethink and redesign packaging which is reusable, recyclable, compostable and — importantly — recoverable. Onstage he asked the audience, “what would happen if we refused refuse?”

McDonough spoke about the need for a safe then circular economy, telling the audience, “if all we’re doing is recycling, then we’re retoxing.”
